Experts published a forecast for the next marketing year for South Africa. It is expected that maize consumption will increase compared to the current season by 0.3 million tons, and will amount to 13 million tons.
According to analysts, in 2021/2022 MY, we should expect to see a decrease in the crop’s yield in the African country. If this year’s volume is projected at 16 million tons, next year it may reach 15.8 million tons. Over the past few years, the worst results were seen in 2019/2020 MY, when 11.8 million tons of maize were harvested compared to the 13.1 million tons recorded in 2018/2019.
As for the initial stocks for the next season, they should grow to 2.1 million tons, before analysts said the figures were 0.2 million tons less. At the beginning of the current period there were 1.2 million tons in the form of reserves. Last season the reserves were 2.7 million tons, and in 2018/2019 — 3.7 million tons of grain. Analysts note stock volume is on the level.
South Africa’s corn supply is expected to be about 17.9 million tons, which will be 0.6 million tons higher than the current season. In 2019/2020, there were 3 million tons lower than current levels.

As for imports, experts believe that its volumes will remain unchanged during this and next marketing years. They will amount to 0.1 million tons of grain, which is less than the results of the 2019/2020 season. At that time, purchases of the foreign crop were at 0.4 million tons.
Corn exports from the Republic of South Africa will increase to 2.7 million tons. Final stocks for the next period are expected to be in the range of 2.2 million tons, a figure 0.2 million tons higher than projected for the 2020/2021 MY.
Maize is considered one of the most popular cereal crops in the world. Its consumption is growing every year in many countries around the world, regardless of continent. For example, as in South Africa, IGC analysts promise an increase in Brazil. In this Latin American country, maize consumption is expected to reach 73.8 million tons, although the current season is promised to be 3.8 million tons less.
Cereal production will also increase to 112.5 million tons, this season forecasts are more modest by 10 million tons.
